At Counselling
Nottingham situated in West Bridgford, we provide counselling for children and young people. There are
many reasons why children may require the additional support that counselling
offers. They can be deeply affected by changes in their lives and may be trying
to deal with difficult family dynamics, bullying, bereavement or separation.
Children can be affected by anxiety, depression, and other mental health
concerns. Autism, Asperger syndrome and ADHD can all present particular
challenges. Early intervention can also
be preventative – rather than problems escalating over the years, the child or
young person can be taught coping mechanisms that will stand them in good stead
throughout life.
June Straw,
our counsellor, creates a nurturing environment in which children and young people feel safe to explore their issues. The therapeutic relationship is
central to the counselling; June provides emotional holding and empathic
understanding, which allows the child or young person to reflect and express. She
always uses age-appropriate methods; for example, puppets, sand, and drawing
enable young children to describe how they view their world, and how they feel
about what’s going on. Teenagers are helped to feel valued; by listening to
their concerns and working in a non-judgemental way, June develops a trusting
therapeutic relationship.
Empathic understanding gives all clients the strength to process their feelings and come to a more balanced understanding of their situation. As the sessions unfold, the child or young person develops greater self-confidence, and an ability to take chances and make the most of life’s opportunities.
June has many years’ experience of working with children and young people. She was a volunteer counsellor with The Place2Be, a well-known charity that provides counselling in schools. The first counsellor to work with The Place2Be for five years, June devoted two days a week to the organisation. She has a busy private practice working with a wide range of clients. She has undertaken extensive training, is CRB checked and has a full understanding of safeguarding issues.
